A Day in the Life of a Behavior Specialist
“My name is Renee George and I love being a behavior specialist. I get to work directly with kids on a one-to-one basis. There is nothing better than greeting a smiling kiddo excited to see me at the beginning of session. Sessions last anywhere from one to three hours, some kids I see twice a week, others once a week. Sessions last anywhere from one to three hours, some kids I see twice a week, others once a week. I like the flexibility I have over my schedule, it leaves me time for my family at home. What’s even better is that I never feel like I’m alone. A team of Clinical Leaders, Clinical Directors, and other Behavioral Specialist are always there to give support and guidance.
I work at the Gilroy facility where we are equipped with toys and activities. We have many themed rooms such as the train room, the little chef room, a sand room and even an art room. This provides us with the proper tools and ensures the kids can explore and have fun! I take pride in my work and improving the lives of our kids and families. I like having a job where I am excited to go to work!”
“When I started with my client seven months ago, they were hitting and kicking me, their parents, and their sibling at least ten times a day. Now, aggression during session has reduced to less than three times per month, and they’re using coping mechanisms outside of session to further prevent hitting and kicking at school and at home. I am so proud of how far they’ve come!”

“I began my journey in this field as a respite and habilitation provider. When I became an RBT, I had a client who was non-verbal. I worked with this client for a year and now this client is able to functionally communicate using ASL and vocal approximations. It was fulfilling to see this client grow and learn to functionally communicate because this wasn’t a common target I worked on as a respite and habilitation provider. It’s amazing to be able to help clients become more independent every day.”
